Description

A large Chelsea tureen

Although the outline of this tureen is fairly simple, the whole surface and four legs are moulded with a complex design of scrolling foliage. Nicholas Sprimont, the artistic driving force behind the Chelsea porcelain factory was a trained silversmith, this piece particularly reflects the sculptural qualities normally associated with the finest and most fashionable silver examples of the day. The moulded surface ornament has diaper panels, stylised acanthus and scrolling foliage. The small asymmetrical reserve panels behind each leafy handle serves to frame finely painted flamboyant birds in flight or at rest and floral sprays. The larger panels on opposing sides are highlighted in puce enamel and enclose painted scenes of magnificent birds

An identical shaped tureen can be seen in the Campbell Museum Collection. The one there is complete with lid and is traditionally thought to be part of a large service made for Warren Hastings
