Description

A very rare red anchor Chelsea porcelain badoque or mug, bell-shaped and brightly painted with two exotic parrots, perhaps after George Edwards, balancing in a small tree on a grassy mound, the reverse with a botanical sprig of apple blossom

12.5cm high.

Red anchor to base

Circa 1754-55

Restored body crack and re-painting to one bird's head and tree leaves

This unusual form is believed to have been copied from the Vincennes/Sèvres factory who produced a small amount of such mugs or cups (known as a bardaque) for the Turkish market. For a Vincennes example cf. Sotheby's, The Evill/Frost Collection Part III, 16th June 2011, lot 210
