Description

A rare 18th century Chelsea porcelain fluted dish of oval shape, the rim edged in chocolate brown, moulded with a border of fine radiating flutes, painted in polychrome colours with two red and black lined panels of European style landscapes; the first with an ancient gatehouse, a ruined arch and a stone building to its right, a central green-leafed tree and three diminutive figures to the left, all in front of a city on the horizon separated by a calm sea, the second panel with a castle turret commanding its centre, a slate roofed building behind, and two small figures to the left bordered by a tree with autumnal foliage, the right and left sides of the dish finely painted with clusters of flowers and the central well decorated with a lady bird, an insect and a blue and yellow butterfly

A very similar dish is in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria and is illustrated in the Flowers and Fables exhibition catalogue, 1984, fig. 114, p. 51
