Description

SOLD

An 18th century English delftware Lambeth or Wincanton plate, painted in manganese with a gentleman walker in the centre gesturing behind, a flock of four birds above, a fence below, scattered trees throughout, a small church on a hill in the distance and a very large pyramid to his left behind a sponge decorated tree

Circa 1745 - 1755

Diameter 22 cm

Restored crack

See British Delft At Williamsburg by Austin; page 165, plate 283 & 284 for a plate with similar style and decoration. Archeological evidence would point to a London attribution, although the style and palette of painting is also sometimes attributed to Wincanton in Somerset on the evidence of shards found by Lipski at the site
