Description

SOLD

An 18th century Bow blanc de chine or white porcelain figure of Spring or Flora, her head tilted to the right, a posy lifted to her nose, the barefoot young woman in a loose top with billowing drapery, standing beside a marble pedestal encrusted with flowers and surmounted by a urn, with a trellis of flowers on her right that descends into a basket of flowers at her feet

The Bow factory's version of the original Meissen figure of 'Smell' from the Five Senses by J-F Eberlein was sometimes called Flora or occasionally inscribed 'Faustina' which has led Raymond Yarborough to suggest that it commemorates the Famous singer Faustina Bordoni (Handel preferred her delicate voice to that of the Italian singer Cuzzoni). Rosalba Carriera executed a pastel of Faustina which is meant again to have inspired the Bow modeller who may have decided to commemorate her in this model. I have included screenshots of Carriera's entitled works

Height 10.85 inches (27.5 cm)

Circa 1756 - 1758

Two finger tips restored & tip of cloak, faint hairline to rear of the plinth

See Bradshaw (P), Bow Porcelain Figures, 1992, plt 81
