Description

A rare Furstenberg figure of Il Capitano

Standing on a flat rococo base picked out in puce, wearing striped breeches and a pale pink jacket, his right arm lifted to his epee, his yellow-lined black cloak draped around his shoulder. Il Captiano is a wonderful character from the series of Commedia dell'Arte. He is a braggart, a narcissist and by all counts a megalomaniac, capable of talking at length about made up conquests of both the militaristic and carnal nature in attempts to impress others, but will generally end up only impressing himself. All his characteristics are displayed by the wonderful fluid modelling of Anton Carl Luplau. Based on the etchings of Johann Jacob Wolrab, Nürnberg, 1720, the series of Commedia figures modelled by Luplau follow the series of large Fürstenberg Commedia figures modelled by Simon Feilner twenty years earlier.
