A rare Tournai plate

delicately painted in puce by Henri-Joseph Duvivier, whilst hurried figures gather on a rocky foreground, all but one staring away from the viewer, their tousled hair and body language a picture of urgency, a row boat at the ready, a jagged tree sprouts from a cluster of rocks to their right and to their left we see more men already in a row boat beside a harbour, with derelict buildings above, barrels of liqueur on the jetty by another schooner, and in the distance, the rest of the city and a pale ghost-like three-mast frigate that has already set sail, catching the breeze and soon to be out of sight, all within a shaped gilt-edged rim, moulded with leaf scroll cartouches, each gilt with flower sprays

Gilt crossed swords and star mark & scratched initials to base

Circa 1765 – 1770
